1. Ask Questions – When buying a new wooden piece of furniture for your home or office, ask how to properly care for the piece.
2. Dusting – A basic feather duster will get the job done, easily removing deposits of dust that accumulate on the surface of your home furniture.  Lamb’s-wool dusters prove even more effective when treated with lanolin, formulated to attract dust to the duster, as they allow cleaners to reach awkward areas and generally hard-to-reach areas of furniture.  Alternatively, a damp wool cloth is also effective at trapping the dust and preventing it from scattering in the air.
3. Cleaning Products – Unless you are positive that your furniture is protected by a finish or a plastic coating, do not use all-purpose cleaners.  Using water to clean wood furniture should be done sparingly and carefully. Allowing water to sit on the wood for too long can result in stains and rings.  Soaking a cloth in mild soapy water, ringing it out, wiping down the furniture and then following up with a completely dry cloth will help you avoid water stains.
4. Waxing – A wax is used to provide further protection in addition to any varnish or other protective layer applied by the manufacturer. Always use either a liquid or paste wax made specifically for furniture in sparing amounts. Always rub with the grain of the wood when applying wax.
5. Polishing – The only protection polish can offer wood home furniture is the creation of a slippery layer that will prevent dust from directly touching the wood.  Avoid the misconception that by polishing your wooden home furniture, it will somehow become harder to damage or scratch.

The term “veneer” often brings to mind an idea of inferior quality for many consumers, which is completely false. This belief goes back many, many years ago to World War II when lumber was scarce and veneer was introduced as a cheap way of creating products with little resources and the product was shoddy at best. Unfortunately this stigma has carried on in folklore and could not be further from the truth.

Wood veneer has several distinct advantages over solid lumber that can’t be overlooked;

Stability — Some species of wood are simply unstable in lumber form. The unorganized grain in burl wood is beautiful but absolutely prone to warping and splitting. By slicing a burl into veneer, wood movement is kept under control by the adhesive and substrate. Even the most unruly woods can be sliced into veneer and used to make a stunning, yet stable panel.

Economy & Availability — Many wood species are so rare and valuable that in lumber form they are simply exorbitant. By slicing a log into veneer, the square foot of “face” material is increased by over 4,000% and a new economy is created for these forest products

Practicality — If you’ve ever seen a classic serpentine dresser, you probably understand the practicality of using veneer for curved work. But it’s certainly not limited to fancy projects. Oak, cherry, walnut, and other hardwood plywood are more than just practical. They’re often considered indispensable for many woodworking projects.

Cracking and Splitting – Solid hardwoods can struggle in dry arid climates such as Arizona. Often times we see cracking and splitting with large surfaces of solid hardwoods.  When used in smaller pieces and edge banding, hardwoods work fine with a nicely up laid veneer.

You are thinking it should be comfortable, good looking and stylish, matching your decor. Leather can be an excellent choice because whether you have a house full of kids or a new apartment that you are trying to update; leather holds up very well over time and looks great in the process. Before buying your new leather sectional or sofa however there are a few things for you to consider:

- How it will fit in the room?

- What is the practicality of the pieces you are buying in terms of use?

- What color is best?

- Is your style traditional, transitional or contemporary?

- What budget are you setting to furnish the room?

One of the critical concerns is cost. Prices for leather furniture can vary drastically. One retailer may sell a couch for $2500 whereas another with a couch that looks almost the same sells for $800. Most times, the cost difference has to do with the categories of leather hides used for the furniture piece. The more attractive leathers are full grain and may show the natural markings of the hide itself. Less expensive leathers are processed through methods which can dissolve the natural grain markers and give an overall look of consistency. These hides are tanned or dyed synthetically. You also must be aware of “leather-like” products that are a small percentage of leather and a majority of other materials. They look like leather but the price will tell you the truth. Leather-like sofas are very inexpensive and usually are built on softwood frames to hit a price point.

Which you product prefer is purely a matter of taste. Full grain leathers are normally more expensive. The top grain or full grain leather is considered to be the most durable leather, especially for furniture because it is made from portions of the animal hide that are the strongest. You will pay more for top grain but you also get more!

Leather holds up longer, repels stains more efficiently, does not trap odors, is less likely to cause allergen problems and offers a timeless décor to any home. In your search you may have noticed that sofas come in many varied price points. Why is one sofa $300.00 and another $3000.00? Well, as you might imagine, there are very good reasons!

Here are some tips for you to consider before you make your next purchase:

The Frame is the Foundation

A well-made frame means a long-lasting sofa. Soft wood, such as pine, is low cost but it may warp or wobble after only a few years. Pricier hardwood, such as kiln-dried oak, ash, or beech, for example is much more resilient. ALWAYS avoid frames made of particleboard as they will warp and crack. Legs should be held on with screws or dowels, not with glue alone. You cannot see the frame, so ask the sales person to describe its construction!

Salt Creek Buying Tip #1: To test frame strength, lift one front corner or leg of the sofa off the floor. As you have raised it three inches, the other front leg should have risen too. If one front leg is still touching the floor, the frame has too much give; it is weak and will not be long-lasting.

Feel Your Cushions and Backs

Polyurethane foam is a low-cost cushion filling used with inexpensive sofas. The more durable, high-density polyurethane foam can feel hard to sit on and softer, cushy low-density polyurethane foam deteriorates more rapidly with constant use. High-resilient (HR) foam is more expensive but much more comfortable and long-lasting. Salt Creek Home Furniture only offers HR foam products. Remember that the cost of the foam is a large part of the final price of a sofa. Cheap Foam = Cheap Sofa.

Salt Creek Buying Tip #2: Insist upon high resilient foam seats and backs only, when making your sofa purchase. In some cases you can select a layer of down for you cushions. If you go with down, make sure it is channeled so that it cannot clump over the years.

Be Tough On Your Textile Choice

Sofas for everyday use need to be constructed with a durable fabric. The best options would be the new synthetic microfibers, which resemble almost every fabric style. They are stain resistant and easily cleanable with water based cleaners (green cleaners). Linen can be a winner, but watch out for loose weaves — they can snag. Leather is very strong but can be much more expensive than fabric.

Salt Creek Buying Tip #3: Look for polyester based microfibers for longevity. They can take a good amount of use and still look new after many years. For leather, 100% top grain is best. Purchasing a fabric protection plan can be an added plus with a young family or pets! Beware of “leather like”materials that are often sold on the cheapest sofas. Some retailers call them “leather-blends” or “bonded leather” where 20% of the covering is leather and 80% is some other material.

So as you can see, a sofa made with a softwood frame, with a polyurethane cushion, covered in leather-blend will likely be on sale for $500-$700 in many of the lesser quality stores. A sofa with a solid hardwood frame, using an HR foam cushion and back, in a 100% top grain leather could be as much as $2000.00 — $3000.00 or more. The same sofa in a high quality microfiber would cost $800.00 — $2000.00 on average.

Remember, when you buy a sofa, most of what you are paying for you cannot see! It is under the fabric.
