Furniture Care Tips

Quality wood furniture is a significant investment expected to last for generations. To maintain its beauty and help it last, wood furniture needs the right care. Hooker Furniture products are finished with two to three coats of lacquer for extra depth and long-lasting durability. The sheen, or gloss, of the finish ranges from high to low, depending on the piece or collection. The finish protects the wood and adds to its beauty. No finish is totally indestructible. But with regular care, the finish will last much longer, providing years of enjoyment to you.

To protect and care for your furniture, we suggest the following:

- Avoid placing your furniture in direct sunlight, as sunlight causes fading.

- Avoid extreme changes in temperature by arranging furniture away from radiators, heat and air vents and air conditioning units.

- Avoid placing plastic or rubber materials (lamp bases, notebooks, placemats, etc.) on your furniture, as certain plastics contain ingredients that may damage the finish.

- Periodically rotate accessories on furniture so they do not sit in the same spot all the time.

- Use pads, cloth or felt to protect the furniture surface from plastic, rubber, hot dishes, beverages, bookends, flowerpots and vases.

- Clean up spills immediately. Use a blotting rather than a wiping action. Water left over a long period of time will cause white spots in the finish. Alcohol, perfume, after-shave and medications can cause severe finish damage.

- Use a protective pad when writing with a ballpoint pen on the furniture surface.

- Lift and place objects rather than dragging them across the furniture surface.

- Avoid placing furniture directly under windows.

- The most important step in selecting any new furniture is to take measurements. You don’t want to find the table of your dreams, only to discover it doesn’t fit. Taking measurements before shopping will save you time and grief in the long run. Record all of your measurements on a notepad and take them with you for easy reference. You may consider making a small sketch (it does not have to be to scale).

- When selecting a dining room table, determine how many place settings you will need. This will help you select the proper size and shape table; as well as how many chairs to purchase. Allow 24” per person as a guide when thinking about how many chairs a given sized table will accommodate.

- A dining room table should be a minimum of 36 inches across however it is more practical to purchase a 40”- 42” width. Based on the length of the table, you may consider an even wider width so it looks proportional. For example, a 12’ table could easily be 48” wide.

- Allow for at least 36 inches around the outside of the table to allow space for chairs and a walkway on all sides. If your table measurement does not leave enough space consider reducing the number of place settings. Most tables come with removable/storable leaves that can be added for special occasions.

- If purchasing dining chairs separately be sure they are the correct height for your table. Most dining tables are 29 to 30 inches tall; look for chairs that are approximately 18–19 inches tall. If your table is an unusual height, speak with the salesperson about the proper size of chair to make your diners comfortable.

- Once you have selected the proper size dining room table and chairs you may want to add additional furniture to the dining room. China cabinets and hutches are decorative and practical for storing delicate items. Buffet tables offer more serving space and linen storage. Many people are using console tables in their dining areas as well, long narrow wall hugging tables that offer additional space for placing smaller items.

- More often than not, people will also consider mixing finishes in dining rooms to give a more relaxed dining feel. Our sales consultants can offer up numerous suggestions if you are open to considering a dining room that in not to “matchy-match”

With pride and pleasure, I am happy to share with everyone today that Salt Creek Office and Home Furniture will be reorganizing our Scottsdale retail presence and opening two (2) new Scottsdale stores next month!

From our current location on Scottsdale Road, we have offered a combined retail store of Home Furniture and Office Furniture for the past number of years. Recently we have made the decision to create in Scottsdale, the same model as we now have in Tempe, and offer two separate stores in the same locale, one for Home Furniture only and another for Office Furniture only.

Our current Scottsdale store located in Suite 110 will be converted into a Home Furniture Store, more than doubling the offerings of beautiful Home Décor we currently show, broadening further our product offerings to address the needs of our discriminating customers, including high quality brands like Aspen Home, Jonathan-Louis Upholstery, Palliser Leather, Bermex Dining, Serta Mattress and so many more!

We will then also occupy Suite 183 in the same retail plaza and this will be opened as our new Office Interiors Design Center, providing a new 12,000 square foot office interiors showcase that will offer every buyer, both home and commercial office alike, a vast array of beautiful products that you have become accustomed to seeing and purchasing at Salt Creek.
